Good Writing

This is a learning experience for me. I want to become a more creative, productive, and interesting writer. I also want to fix my flaws and learn from my mistakes. I hope by writing this blog I will increase my ability to become a better writer and have a better understanding of what good writing is and what I think it is.

My definition of good writing consists of keeping my audience’s attention with good details, interesting facts, and good ideas about my subject or point. Good writing also has solid organization, which includes good flow, isn’t jumpy, and allows readers to understand what’s being put out there for them to read. There also needs to be good spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

An example of good writing to me would be the book Twilight. Twilight is very fluent and interesting. It keeps my attention and is easy to understand. This is what I like. This is good writing to me. Some people may think otherwise, but for me Twilight has good details and interesting ideas that keeps your interest.

Here is an example of what I mean:

I vividly remembered the flat black color of his eyes the last time he’d glared at me — the color was striking against the background of his pale skin and his auburn hair. Today, his eyes were a completely different color: a strange ocher, darker than butterscotch, but with the same golden tone.
Bella Swan, Twilight, Chapter 2, p.46

By reading Twilight and going back and reading some of my own writing it shows me just how much my writing needs work. So I would definitely say my writing needs improvement. Writing has always been my weakest subject. It seems to be that I know what I want to write, but I never can get it out quite right, or the way I want it. It’s kind of like a writer’s block. I would have to say the flow of my writing needs more work and the editing and revising process of my writing needs enhancement also. So there is definitely room for growth in my writing.

I really like your view on good writting. I like the fact that the first thing you mention was keeping the reader's attention first off. I feel this is the biggest thing of all. Many of the other blogs were mentioning grammar first where as you did later on within your blog. Nice priorities. I share many of your same ideas on writting and am also looking to improve my writting
